Definition and Demonstration of Special Handheld based Applications in Difficult Environment - SHADE

The European Space Agency launched 2002 an initiative to push novel applications of the non transport sector that improve safety and security by one order of magnitude and that shall be of benefit to the public. In this working frame (ARTES-5) TeleConsult Austria (Austria), Utopika (Portugal), and Telespazio (Italy) introduced the ESA funded project - Special Handheld based Applications in Difficult Environment (SHADE).

SHADE addresses to the location sensitive information exchange in dense urban and indoor environments.

The envisaged system architecture incorporates three different navigation principles integrated with satellite navigation. The architecture additionally enables the user to access multimedia data for information extraction and guiding purposes.

One last key issue of SHADE is to involve user communities into the definition and demonstration phase to meet the requirements of the potential market.
