Future high precision navigation system for inland waterways – NAVWAT
The NAVWAT study investigates future applications in the field of inland waterway navigation requiring
high precision position and velocity data with the goal to support the ship master in critical navigation
situations. The focus lies on the identification of the applications, the technical description and the
assessment of requirements for future positioning & navigation technologies.
NAVWAT aims at utilising modern GNSS and augmentation infrastructure to provide accurate position and
velocity information as well as integrity information within the domain of River Information Services.
This precise position information should be related to the information contained in onboard ENC
(Electronic Navigational Chart). The aim is to provide the distance of the vessel’s edges from nearby
riverside infrastructure on a real time basis.
Thus, a system concept will be developed which supports the shipmaster by navigating in narrow surroundings
(locks, bridges, harbours, etc.) with high integrity. From the present point of view, an integration or
combination with the already used AIS (Automatic Identification System) and AIS transponder technology as
well as the Inland ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) seem to be the most suitable
solution.
The NAVWAT project is coordinated by via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft mbH.
The NAVWAT project is managed by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG – Österreichische
Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH – www.ffg.at) through funds of the Austrian Space Applications
Programme (ASAP).
