GALileo-bAsed seamless and robust Positioning Applications for loGistics Optimization
proceSses (GALAPAGOS)
Aims
Development of a sophisticated hybrid positioning, communication, and information system tailored to
logistics applications such as container tracking
|
|
|
Brief Description
The positioning system is based on high sensitivity GNSS receivers augmented by EGNOS/EDAS and assisted data.
Additional positioning technologies such as GSM and WLAN are incorporated to improve continuity and availability
of the positioning information in complex environments. The system further uses redundant communication methods
in order to provide robust and seamless use as part of special operational logistic systems.
Ad hoc networks are used to establish short and fast connections between containers, which are occasionally part
of the network. For example if containers are stacked in a storage area, they can establish communication links
to other containers or to fixed locations.
The GALAPAGOS system ensures provision of a seamless supply chain for a complete logistic action. It provides among
other features displaying precise position, data factory and warehouse floor plans. The development of hard- and
software is refined by technology specialists and is accompanied by scientific studies. The use within operational
logistics systems is the main advantage for the associated partner and launch customer of the project, the logistics
department of the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen Logistics).
